Happy New Year! Woo!

Last night we stayed home. Boy and Girl Child stayed up with us to watch the ball drop. Dick Clark made me want to cry. I know he has to be about 200 years old now, but it was still sad.

Jason got the bright idea that the children should bang pots and pans when it was midnight. Apparently he always did that when he was a child. I? Had never heard of that, but he insists that it's common. Is it common and I'm just stupid? Or is this another one of those I'm-not-from-Connecticut-so-I-couldn't-possibly-understand kind of things? I grew up in East Tennessee and had to be in bed by 9pm.

Also? Boy and Girl Child are almost ten. So they were kind of like, "Um, what?" Because isn't banging on pots and pans something kids do when they are like two? I don't know, they never did that either.

But they were good sports. They tried to make a sufficient amount of noise.

Today, since I am a complete glutton for punishment, I started Blog 365. So I'm blogging every day for 2008.

I know I blog most days, but with this? I'll be blogging every day. No excuses! No waiting! No crap! (Yeah right)

That's the plan anyway.

I keep sitting here trying to think of something wise and profound to say to welcome in the new year. But I can't, because I suck. Also? My head hurts from everyone banging on pots last night.

Banging pots? Wow. I've heard of that, and I think I could've possibly seen it in a movie? But, we've never done it, LOL.

Happy New Year, Chick! Hope yours is wonderful! :)

Now there's an idea! Our apartment neighbors were having an obnoxious party, and that would have been a perfect thing to send our 2 yr old to do outside their door :)

Wow! You've hopped on the crazy train too ??? Wheeeeeeeeee! We're all losing our minds in '08!

I feel your pain, I've blogged everyday for almost 2 months, and now it's the first day of blog365, and I've got nothin' :(

Yep, we did that. Banged on pots and pans when we were kids.

My dad said it was because we didn't have any fireworks leftover from July 4.

I did the banging pots thing growing up. I guess until I got too cool for it. My parents got together with their friend and kids and all the kids were allowed to stay up eating snacks and watching TV while the parents played cards.

Then at midnight, the whole lot of us went outside and made an insane amount of obnoxious noise.

The past few years, I've been asleep before 11 and think I might hurt someone if they banged a pot near me.

Happy New Year!

Are you in Connecticut?!?!

I've been living in CT for 28 years...and I've only known one person who banged pots. And that person does not live in CT...they lived in California.

That deleted thing was me. I keep signing in on the wrong account!

I have never heard of pot banging. Just shooting guns aimlessly in the air waiting for Jethro Leroy Bubba to appear on the news with, "Damn!! The bullet flew out of nowheres and hit me in my foot!" Or fireworks. Which are also fun (see two posts ago).

Are you sure your head hurts from pots? Or is it from the Bartles & James? Oh, not you? That must be me.

I think I made it to 12:03 before I crashed. Of course if I'd been home in Kentucky, I could have went to bed an hour earlier. :D

Blog 365???? I couldn't even handle doing it everyday in November! Good luck. You can do it.

My kids were in bed at the normal time last night, and GH and I didn't even make the midnight mark. We're super lame.....

My mom taught us to bang pots and pans-I have not passed the tradition on to my children.

Last night I was lying in bed reading when I heard a racket. "What the---?" I thought. Then it hit me-"oh yeah-it's New Year's Eve." NOW WILL THOSE A-HOLES PLEASE KEEP IT DOWN!!!

I'm such a party pooper.

Happy New Year.

I think the pots and pans thing is to drive out any bad vibes for the new year.

In the UK we do 'first footing', it always has to be some one with dark hair - so my father used to be the one who went round our neighbour's houses on NYE.

This from Wikipedia:

First-Footing, in British folklore, especially that of the north and Scotland, is the first person who crosses the threshold after midnight at the end of New Year's Eve (in other words, the first person to enter the house on New Year's Day) [1]. Although it is acceptable in many places for the first-footer to be a resident of the house, they must not be in the house at the stroke of midnight in order to first-foot. Thus going out of the house after midnight and then coming back in to the same house is not considered to be first-footing.

Good luck is believed to be brought to the house by the First-Foot, and a female First-Foot is regarded with dread. In Lancashire a light-haired man is as unlucky as a woman, and it became a custom for a dark-haired male to be the one and only first-foot. In Worcestershire luck is ensured by stopping the first carol-singer who appears and leading him through the house. In Yorkshire it must always be a male who enters the house first, but his fairness is no objection.

The first-foot usually brings a gift of coal and salt. The coal representing "warmth" for the year ahead and the salt representing "flavour". Often bread is regarded as a good sign, indicating that the household won't go hungry in the year to come. In Scotland first-footing was always more elaborate than in England, involving a subsequent entertainment.

Yep, we do the pots and pans thing too! We also open the front door to let in the new year and open the back to let the old out. All at the same time. It's fun, my kids really enjoy it. Happy New Year!

Never heard of the pots and pan thing. Must be a "damn Yankee" tradition. I turned out the light at 11:30, could have stayed up until midnight, but HP was whining to go to sleep. Ah well.

Happy 2008!

Happy New Year Chick + family!

I've done the bangning on pots and pans thing but not on New Years. I banged on pots and pans when the Redskins won the Superbowl in like - oh I don't know - the late 80's? With my Mom and sister if I recall correctly while "Hail to the Redskins" played on the record player....but anyway, where was I....

Dick Clark made me want to cry too. Oh, and the Blog 365 thing? I ALMOST did it. ALMOST. Good luck to you, you can do it!

I know the pots and pans thing, but not from New Years Eve - from Chinese New Years Eve, when it is to scare away the evil spirits and the dragon Nian.
Happy New Year to you.

When I was a kid we would go to my aunt's and uncles and at midnight my uncle set off this little mini canon he had and all the other men and boys shot their guns in the air and I? I blew a police whistle.

Last night my husband had some fireworks saved up and the kids pulled the cork on the little confetti champagne bottles and he went out and set off some loud ones.

It was a good night. Happy New Year and I look forward to reading all 366 posts in 2008--yes I said 366 its a leap year or didn't you realize that? LOL

Yeah for 365! Let's celebrate by banging some pots and pans together (since neither one of us knows the root of the tradition we can totally pretend like that is the way it should be).

Well, I have to say that I'm in the same boat as the people who are excited that you're going to blog every day! Whoo hoo!!!!

Good luck with that. I'd love to try, but I know my own limitations.

I'm a native Californian, and every year Mom took us out to bang away on those pot and pans. she also had this huge dinner bell she would ring. I definitely am passing this tradition to my son, and we were out there last nite whoopin' it up.

Must be a Northeast thing. We did it when we were kids. I am NOT carrying this tradition on.

I was in bed at 8:30 and that was stretching it!

I've never heard of that either! And, I will not be doing that in my house. Of course, I try not to be home on NYE anyway.

My parents always had us in bed by 9 on new years also. My kids insist on seeing the ball drop which is funny because where we are midnight here is 4 hours after the ball actually dropped. Although Ketchikan has no stations of it's own they are all from different places so we actually saw the ball drop at 8 this year...it was weird.....
