She has a good point.

Girl Child and I were talking about someone who had hurt me and had sort of apologized.

Girl Child was skeptical and said,

"Mom? You know what they say. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer".

Cynical? You bet.
Valid point? Probably.

Yep, truths from the mouths of babes.

But if Jason's mom died today, how would you feel? More importantly, how would Jason feel?

My mother threw a snit-fit and walked out of our lives when my oldest was 7 months. She reconnected when he was 4, and then only because my step-father had died and she was getting family pressure to at least let me know so I could attend the funeral. Which is ironic, since I hated the b@stard, but that's a whole different story. After she came back we danced around each other cautiously for a year or so before easing back into a somewhat normal relationship. We have never talked about the issues that she left over in the first place - the few times I tried to bring it up she quickly changed the subject, and eventually said "I'd just like to let that be water under the bridge and move on from here."

It was really hard to let her come back into our lives, especially since there was (and to some degree still is) a fear that she will walk away again. And this time my kids would be old enough to know they were missing a grandma, so it would hurt them as well as me. But she's been back for a little over 2 years now and even though there have been hard and very uncomfortable times, I'm glad to have her as an active part of our family again.

Your MIL has cleverly thrown the ball back into your court. And Boy Child and Girl Child have both given you some stellar advice there! Good luck with whatever you and Jason do from here.

Well I always say, "Watch your back". And get someone else to watch it too, if you can. Two sets of watchers are better than one.

It's ok to be cynical. Trust must be earned. Don't ever give more than you're able to handle losing.

Once you've been hurt, it's hard to forget that. You and Jason are their mother and father and they wouldn't ever want to see you hurt and would do what they can to prevent that.
